Six dead, three hospitalized after drinking spurious alcohol in Chuadanga

Locals allege that illegal homemade alcohol has been sold in the area for years and blame inadequate enforcement for the tragedy.
Six people have died and three remain hospitalized after consuming spurious alcohol in Dingdeh Bazar of Shankarchandra Union, Chuadanga Sadar Upazila, local officials said.

The deaths, reported between Saturday and Sunday, involved low-income workers, including van pullers, mill workers, and fish traders. Police warned that the toll could rise as several more remain in critical condition.
According to local sources, 14 to 15 people drank the alcohol together on October 9. Five victims died over the following days, with another succumbing while receiving treatment at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital on Sunday.
Officer-in-Charge Khaledur Rahman said, “Primary investigation shows that all the victims consumed alcohol from the same source.” Police conducted house-to-house searches late Sunday to locate other affected individuals.
Among the hospitalized is day laborer Alim Uddin, who said he fell seriously ill after consuming a small amount while working on a corn load. His condition is reported as stable.

Four of the deceased have been buried, while the remaining two were sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
Additional Superintendent of Police Jamal Al Naser confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. The community remains in mourning and fear over the incident.
The deceased are Kheder Ali (40), van puller; Mohammad Selim alias Selim Professor (40), fish trader; Mohammad Laltu alias Ripu (30), van puller; Md Shahid (45), mill worker; Md Samir (55), mill worker; and Laltu Sardar (52), mill worker.
