More storms and flooding close schools and cause train cancellations in Malaga & Tarragona

New storms in Spain caused school closures and train cancellations on Wednesday, two weeks after flash floods in Valencia and other parts of the country killed more than 220 people and destroyed thousands of homes.
In the Malaga province of Andalusia, streets were flooded, while 3,000 people near the Guadalhorce river were moved from their homes as a preventive measure. Schools across the province were closed, along with many stores.
Trains travelling between Malaga and Madrid on the high-speed AVE rail line were also cancelled. Videos posted on social media (see below) included an image of rain pouring through the ceiling in an El Corte Ingles department store in central Malaga.
There were no reports of any deaths.
Spain’s national weather agency AEMET put Malaga on red alert, saying up to 70 mm of rain had accumulated in an hour. Parts of the Tarragona province in Catalonia also faced heavy rain and remained under red alert.
The storm in Malaga delayed the start of the Billie Jean King Cup tennis finals between Spain and Poland, which was scheduled for Wednesday.
On Tuesday night the worst of this latest storm was in Castellón in the flood-stricken Valencia region, where roads were closed due to the flood risk. Videos posted on X (Twitter) showed how the town of Benicarló was flooded as cars drove around in half a metre of water.
