A monsoon trough is making its way across the north of Australia, causing the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) to issue several flood watch warnings.

For the NT, flood watch warnings have been issued for the Waterhouse and parts of the Barkly, Carpentaria, and Arnhem Coastal Rivers.

In Queensland, the Northeast Tropical Coast and northwestern regions have been issued with flood watch warnings.

The BOM has warned that “persistent heavy rainfall” combined with thunderstorms may also create a risk of flash flooding for some of the affected areas.

The wild weather comes with the slightly early arrival of the monsoon season. The BOM has warned that heaviest rainfall will arrive across the state and territory on Saturday and Sunday with the potential for it to continue well into the new year.

Christmas Day saw a powerful ‘microburst’ rip through the Gold Coast, downing a crane and causing carnage for resident and local holiday parks.

The BOM will continue to monitor the build up of storm systems over the festive period and asks residence of affected areas to keep an eye out for any further updates or warnings.
