Officers were called to Dr Michael Yung’s $2 million home on James Street in Gilberton about 4.20am on Monday after reports he had been the victim of an alleged assault.

When they arrived at the 61-year-old’s home, he was found with “life-threatening injuries” and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in an “extremely critical condition”.

Police have since confirmed he died in hospital on Tuesday evening.

Detective Superintendent Des Bray said officers are investigating up to 15 home break-ins or car thefts that occurred in the area in the days leading to Dr Yung’s assault.

Locals of the neighbouring affluent suburb of Medindie reported a string of break-ins in recent weeks, including one incident in which police have obtained surveillance footage showing five youths attempting to break in to a home.

In his update on Tuesday afternoon, Superintendent Bray said police had constructed a timeline relating to a group of five and their movements through the area in the early hours of Monday morning, before Dr Yung’s alleged assault.

Just after midnight, a group of five were seen near a black BMW on Dr Yung’s street.

At 12.23am, police believe the same group of five were seen at a property a couple of streets over on Dutton Terrace in Medindie.

Five people were seen fleeing the scene where a BMW had crashed at Seaview Road in Tennyson at 2.45am, about 12km away.

“At around that time we know that offenders were walking along streets trying to steal cars, and in fact did steal a Mazda from West Lakes,” Superintendent Bray said.

At 3.40am, a torch light was seen pointing into Dr Yung’s home in Gilberton, and a person was seeing trying to open the door of his car.

About 40 minutes later, two people were seen walking along the street.ll of the state’s Major Crime unit’s resources have been devoted to the investigation into Dr Yung’s alleged assault, Superintendent Bray said.

He said it is still early in the investigation, but police believe it is most likely it was a “targeted attack” due to the luxury vehicle parked in Dr Yung’s driveway.

Police have appealed for anyone with dashcam footage from between 12am to 5am on Monday morning within a 500m radius of James St, Gilberton, or anyone with information about the alleged offenders of the series of break-ins, car thefts or Dr Yung’s assault to come forward.
