CCTV has captured the terrifying moment a trio of criminals almost broke into a car with a family inside, including a two-year-old child, in Melbourne’s southeast.

About 6pm Sunday, three hooded thieves emerged from a stolen Mercedes Benz and descended upon the car parked in a driveway off Nicholas Street in Ashburton.

The thieves began desperately trying to open the car doors while 38-year-old Chris sat in the driver’s seat, with his wife next to him and their toddler in the back.

Chris reverses out of the driveway, pulls out into the street and rams the stolen Mercedes the trio had arrived in as he sped away.

“They were banging on my window, at my window, they could see my child in the back yet they were still trying to take the car,”

“I reversed out and they blocked the road and I went straight at them.”

The offenders fled the scene and an investigation remains ongoing into their whereabouts, Victoria Police said.

The police are urging anyone with information on the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
